DISTRICT GOVERNOR LETTER – MAY 2010
Dear Lions, Lionesses, LEO’s,
Our 24
th District 14-W Convention is history. For months, the talk was about the upcoming DistrictConvention; the planning, the preparations, the involvement of so many Lions from our District. The success of
the convention was because of you, Lion _______, for your support, time, help and attendance. It is not possible
to thank everyone personally in this letter but do know I sincerely appreciate your efforts and thank you.
If you were unable to attend, there was sand, lots of it and a water pool. So many smiles, the sounds of
laughter, the joy on faces best describes Friday evening. The Paradise attire by Lion Mike and Lion Jim (14-U)
was priceless. District 14-W Lions really know how to have a good time and have FUN, was one comment
given by Lions not from our District. From decorating, swimming, food, time with Leader Dog Rep. Carroll &
Hunter, ID Anne & Tom, dancing and finally awards, you would think the LEO’s would be ready to go home.
Almost all of the LEO’s came directly from school to decorate. Nope, they didn’t want to leave. Thankfully,
parents were patient and enjoyed down time in the lobby. Thank you LEO’s for providing the Lions of District
14-W with our Tropical Paradise.
Lions arrived early Saturday and were greeted with mmm...mmmm….. Good food provided by Plains
JLW Mountain Laurel Lions. Our body was nourished and we were ready to engage in business. It is official,
Lions of District 14-W have elected Eileen Yurish as DG and Marylin “Mimi” Tosh as VDG for 2010-2011.
The position for 2VDG is open. Take a Chance. Move from the known to the unknown. Grow in Leadership.
Complete your letter of intent, your Lions Clubs endorsement letter and submit it to CS Pat.
The Necrology Service honored our deceased Lions since last year’s district convention. It was a
moving service in word and song. Please honor the Lions from your Clubs at their wake/viewing with the
Service of Remembrance found on page 54-55 in your District Directory. Contact their family. Share with them
how Lions honor and console through this service.
Tweet, retweet, subscribe to channels, like you - were just a few words that were heard during the
technology seminar. Go to our District website
www.district14w.org, click on secretary’s page and scroll topower point presentation. You too can use today’s technology with Lions from around the world. Try it. Lion
Andy displayed Lions Crew at Work & Lions Green Team apparel during ID Anne’s interactive session. Lion
Carroll & Hunter amazed many Lions. This was his 11
th convention in 16 weeks. Carroll and Hunter have beenin 23 states sharing the independence a visually impaired person has through the gift of a Leader Dog. Did you
look at the cover of your May LION magazine? This was our Lions ALERT Seminar by Lion Tom. He
provided much of the information for the article and spoke how Lions were and are still making a difference
through service. The afternoon concluded with DGE Eileen sharing how we, Lions of District 14-W, have and
are “Moving to Grow”.
What is a LION? ID Anne spoke on who we are and how we as Lions help so many people locally and
throughout the world. Your monetary donations plus the donations by Lions worldwide help LCIF to meet
humanitarian needs. We are Volunteers who “SERVE”. Lions freely choose to help and serve others. Thank
you. ID Anne presented International President Certificates of Appreciation in recognition of distinguished
achievements in fulfilling the service mission of Lions Clubs to Pat Kwetkauskie, Rich Kilvitis, Charlie
Thomas, Kevin Winton and Mike Wisniewski. Congratulations. District 14-W’s Lion of the Year Award was
presented to Rich Kilvitis, a Lion whose efforts embraced this year’s theme of “Move to Grow.”
Congratulations.
Our District Convention was not the only note worthy event in April/May. With excitement and
enthusiasm, the Re-Organized Mountain Top Area Lions are “Moving to Grow”. The celebration on April 19
thincluded the induction of members, installation of officers as part of their re-birth. The Lions have brooms for
sale, eye glass recycling boxes at various locations and will be at the Mountain Top Relay for Life Race on May
29
th. The Lions would love to meet you and would enjoy your help. Contact President Julie, 497-6602 orjulieshenyo@rocketmail.com
for details. Thank you to the visiting Lions from our District for your support. The Pittston City Lions will be celebrating their Charter Night in June. Look for details in this
newsletter. The Lions have held a White Cane Collection and have sponsored a Little League Team. All three
new clubs have Certified Guiding Lions who are active, helpful and supportive of our newest Lions. Your help
and support is important now and in the future for all our new clubs including West Pittston. If you still haven’t
signed-up as a visiting Lion, contact myself for dates open for any of our newest clubs. Share your knowledge,
share the good times, FUN, and laughter you have as a Lion. Caring is sharing. Our family of Lions is growing.
Your support is vital to the success of what we do as Lions – “SERVICE”.
We are in the last quarter of this fiscal year and our last Official FUN Event is the “District 14-W Golf
Competition “. It is for Lions, friends of Lions and Lions family members. Be at Mickey’s Golf Center in

the meeting, a reservation is needed for seating. Please arrive by 1:00 pm. In less than 3 hours, registration,
dinner, and meeting are completed. This is an opportunity to get to know more of your District 14-W Family of
Lions. All Clubs should have at least one member attend.
If you haven’t noticed, the snow is FINALLY gone. Mother Nature is teasing us with some very
unseasonably warm, sunny days. More people are leaving their homes and enjoying the outdoors. This is a
wonderful opportunity for clubs to be VISIBLE in their community. Share with others what you do. Invite
members of your community to your clubs functions. Ask someone who is not a member to help with a project.
Many clubs have spring clean-up projects. Fund-raisers, such as Golf Tournaments, are an opportunity to
increase awareness of what your Lions Club does.
Most importantly, as Lions we need to remember our existing members. Thank them for being a Lion.
Encourage all Lions in your Club to participate to the fullest extent of their capabilities. Please remember, we
are volunteers and that each individual Lion has his or her own level of commitment. It is important to “Take A
Chance, Take a Risk, Make a Change.” Our world we live in is constantly changing – sometimes so fast, we
may even miss some of the changes, especially in the area of technology. What doesn’t change is what we do as
Lions – SERVICE. Will you be willing to try a new project or fundraiser? Will you be supportive and
encourage Lions to take new positions of leadership? Will you and your Lions Club be willing to adapt to the
changing needs of your members?
Throughout this fiscal year, our District 14-W has changed. Lions have accepted the challenge to try
new Leadership positions. More than a dozen Lions accepted this challenge with first time positions on the
District Cabinet. Does your club need help with membership and recruiting? Just Ask. The District now has
veterans in the field of extension through our Extension Blitz’s. Less than 10% of Lions Clubs in our District
report their M&A’s by paper. Through electronic communication, ALL Lions have the opportunity to know
what is happening in the District, State and International Level. So, what do you want to know? If you can think
it, it’s there – waiting for you to learn, share and grow. Over 1.3 million Lions are Lions Clubs International.
That means you, me and every Lion in District 14-W. Together; we are “The Largest & Greatest Service
Organization” in the world. Thank you for being a Lion.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR ELECT LETTER- MAY 2010
Dear Lion, Lionesses and LEOS,
This last week-end in April was one filled with warm weather and an exciting time for Lions
of District 14W. Our District Convention provided everyone the opportunity to spend time
with other Lions from our District and other parts of the State and country. Guest speaker,
International Director Ann Smarsh and husband DGE Tom, from Kansas gave very
interesting presentations and provided ample time for question and answers at their
seminars. What truly down to earth people who really enjoyed being in District 14W. Also in
attendance were PID Ted and Lion Rita Fusco and PID Bob and Lion Judy Miller. Everyone
enjoyed Carroll Jackson and his Leader dog Hunter. His presentation was filled with humor,
life experiences and Leader Dog information. Kicking off the Convention was Friday's
Tropical Paradise with Lions dressed in Bermuda shorts, sandals, flowered shirts, leis, and
yes, even a grass hula skirt (way to go Lion Mike from Twin Boro). Everyone had a fantastic
time dancing to the music provided by Lion DJ Rob Sax. Our Leos had their own pool party
but later came over and joined the ''old timers'' to receive their awards and try their luck at
the ''limbo''. Congratulations to Leo Samantha Weiss who was presented with the Leo of the
Year Award.
Saturday morning started off with the business session and the election was held. I am
privileged to have IVDGE Mimi serving with me next year (but we still need a 2nd vice) any
takers??? Following the voting we had our beautiful Necrology service honoring our
deceased Lions that Lion Marina and Father Martin do so well. Breakfast and lunch was
provided by my home club JLW Mt. Laurel, and what a fantastic job they did. If you went out
of their hungry than it was your own fault, because they surely had enough of good
nourishing food and surely enough drinks to ''wet your whistle'', how about the drink called
""EILEEN'S SPECIAL'' wasn't that delicious???? Thanks to bartender Lion Vicki for her ''skills
'' in brewing that one up.....The conclusion of our Convention ended with the Banquet. Our
Zone Chair Rich Kilvitis was presented with the Lion of the Year Award, congratulations
Rich and I'm glad you're staying on as Zone Chair for me next year. Congrats to everyone
else who received awards. Did you win any of our beautiful baskets?? I didn't, but Lion Rose
Linko and her committee did a great job. If you missed this year’s Convention, you missed
a great week-end. There is always next year, you have 365 days to start planning for it........
We are in the final quarter of this Lion fiscal year and we still need your PU101 forms. There
are a lot of clubs who have not sent them to International, State and District. Please try to
have those sent in by MAY15th....PLEASE
I am asking some of the younger members of our clubs to take on Leadership roles. Many
clubs are struggling to fill these positions and our older Lions are forced to take on the
reins over and over. With some of our younger members in Leadership roles, it can bring
new ideas and different projects to bring new life into our clubs.
Don't forget, this is the last month to bring in new members to be eligible to win the $100
for your club.$100 to the club bringing in the most women members or $100 to the most
new members overall. Well I think I have said enough for this month, see you soon...
DGE Eileen
FOOD FOR THOUGHT: As I awoke this morning I thought of and was honored to have my
friends: The old and the new.......
VICE DISTRICT GOVERNOR ELECT LETTER-MAY 2010
Dear Lions, Lioness, and LEOs,
Are you taking advantage of all that the District has to offer? It’s spring and it is time to get
out and enjoy all of the events around the District. For three days in a row Mom and I did
not have to cook! One of those events was the Reorganization Party for Mountain Top. It’s
great to see growth. Are you part of the growth? It’s easy. You ask a family member, a
friend, a colleague, someone that you think has a lot to offer the club, the community, and
Lionism. They might say no but you’ll never know unless you ask. And don’t take no as a
final answer. The next time just might be the right time.
Were you at the District Convention? There were signup sheets so don’t lie or there will be
coal in your stocking at Christmas. It was well attended but could have been better.
If you did not attend
- on Friday night, Lion Mike knew how to get in the spirit and the Leoshad a great time poolside. Then they joined the Lions and DJ Rob Sax for more fun. I think
the Leos will be back next year. District Secretary Pat and DG Patty did a great job of
planning this event for our wonderful Leos!
If you did not attend
– you missed voting. Thank you to all that came out and voted.Though there was no opposition, DGE Eileen and I are grateful for the support shown by
those who did come.
If you did not attend
– the seminars were good ones. I always hear complaints of the sameole same ole. Well, here was fresh, up-to-date-information.
If you did not attend
- the evening’s awards and dinner were very nice. Congratulations toall the award recipients and to the Lion of the Year – Zone Chair Rich Kilvitis, which was his
second award of the night! Wow, was he surprised! And so was Lion Mary Lou.
If you did not attend
– you missed the DGE and the VDGE choking – on emotion. You alsomissed the rehearsal for my new tumbling act. It was the first and hopefully the last
performance.
If you did not attend
- we missed you. Please come next year and I won’t have to tell youwhat you missed!
DG Patty talks about wearing the Lion’s pin wherever you go. That’s to show your pride. The
reason I wear mine everywhere is for pride and for identity. That pin says that you are
someone that people can approach. Maybe they need glasses. Maybe they have glasses to
donate. These are some of the things that people do know about Lions. Now you have an
opportunity to inform them of all the other things that Lions can do. Many people just don’t
know whom to ask. It’s about visibility and helping others. Ask them to join while you are
enlightening them.
The State Convention is in Wyomissing, near Reading from May 13 to May 16. Come to the
parade, attend a meeting, and get a little shopping done at the nearby outlets all in one
Saturday, May 15. Like our forester Manny used to say –“Enjoy! Enjoy!” spring and the
Wonderful 14W.
See you around the District.
Mimi, VDGE
